Abstract

Urban aspect and monuments of imperial ideology in Asia Minor

The imperial cult had an early and great influence on the urban
landscapes of RomanAsia. At first the places of this cult where chosen in close connection with the building of the civic administration (for example, Milet, Ephesos). With time, the rise of imperial temples and sanctuaries in increasing number and dimensions transformed the aspect of the cities (Aphrodisias, Ephesos, Pergamon etc.). In the 2nd and 3rd century AD, the presence of buildings with imperial images was widespread in every city (Ephesos, Hierapolis) and town (Boubon, Kestros).
