Abstract

The knowledge of Oscan inscriptions in the correspondence of Gori, Remondini, and Passeri

The article reconstructs the history of the interpretation of the first Oscan documents and their impact on Italian antiquary. Starting from some unpublished manuscript letters, the author presents here the so far unpublished Passeri’s and Remondini’s autograph transcriptions of these inscriptions. The publication of this material is relevant for the history of the studies of Italic antiquities and of the languages of ancient Italy, because thanks to these manuscripts we can now reassess what scholars currently know about that period and the scientific thought of these important intellectual figures.
