Hermeneumata Festina

Abstract

This essay belongs to the typology of philological research on lost classical
grammatical works that can be restored thanks to the tradition of
ancient resumées. In this case, the famous encyclopedical and alphabetical
treatise of Verrius Flaccus partially survives thanks to two epitomae:
the first was assembled over the original work by Festus, the
second one is an indirect attempt of epitomizing the first, realized with
‘arrogance, rather than intelligence’ by Paul the Deacon.
