Abstract

Cavalleria rusticana 1890-1891. The first disposizione scenica of Sonzognohouse in the genesis and reception of the workFrom the dust of the archives a precious and completely unknowndocument has re-emerged: the first disposizione scenica of the Milanesemusical house Sonzogno, dedicated to Cavalleria rusticana, theopera that inaugurated the season of verismo in the fin de siècle Italianmelodrama. The document, published here in a commented editionfor the first time, is not exhaustive, as in the case of the disposizioniand mises en scène of the rival house of Ricordi, but it allows to tracea better defined panorama on the performance practice of that time, and to seize some distinctive features of the reception of this opera inthe first year of life. Up to grasp a sign of the high-profile reception inthe intertextual reference to the Mascagni’s addio alla madre placedat the end of Mahler’s Eighth symphony, who directed Cavalleria forthe first time in a foreign language in 1890.
