Abstract

The aim of this paper is to define the literary character of Chamaeleon's works of the type Περὶ τοῦ δεῖνα (On so-and-so) more accurately than previous scholarship has done and to reconsider his specific way of working. Following F. Leo, most commentators have seen in Chamaeleon's books such as On Pindar and On Stesichorus, commentaries on the works of these poets, which include,
among other things, biographical interpretations of selected passages. However, a close reading of the fragments makes clear that they were biographies of poets in the ancient meaning of the word.
