ARIE, ACQUE, LUOGHI, ARCHITETTURA: ANTIOCHIA NELL’ORAZIONE 11 DI LIBANIO
Abstract
In his oration in praise of Antioch (Oration 11), Libanius devotes significant space to the topical motifs of its excellent geographical position, the regularity of its seasons, the richness of its waters, and its beneficial exposure to the winds, and to the merits of its urban plan, which enhances the advantages already offered by the environment. The oration documents the spreading among rhetors of motifs originally developed in medical literature, which had their first, seminal arrangement in the Hippocratic treatise Airs, Waters, Places.
