Abstract

The medieval history according to Pierre Toubert

The author retraces the intellectual path of the illustrious historian of
medieval Italy Pierre Toubert, beginning from 1973, when his ‘thèse
d’État’ (Les structures du Latium médiéval) came out. He shows the
essential contributions of Toubert in two main fields: the rural history
(with the concept of ‘structures’) and the so-called ‘incastellamento’.
The article is also devoted to the most recent developments of these two
fields of research.
