Abstract

“God is deadˮ from Schiller to NietzscheA farewell to the gods but not least to God himself: beginning withSchiller, German thinkers, mainly poets, tried to no longer build andjustify man’s actions and purposes on religion, but instead on the veryessence of secularised man. This article unravels the history of this attemptfrom Schiller to Heine. It would later develop at a much fasterpace, from Nietzsche onwards – leading to the most radical step in thehistory of secularisation.
