Abstract

The film Il primo re focuses on the relationship of the twin brothers Romulus and Remus who are overwhelmed when the river Tiber floods. In addition to the film’s set design, with a remarkable attempt at historical reconstruction based on valid historical and archaeological sources, the director and production team have attempted to engage in a philological operation very similar to Mel Gibson’s successful attempt in Passion of Christ – which is in Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin. In fact, the cast of Il primo re speaks a proto-Italic language, reconstructed by a group of linguists thanks to inscriptions, tombs and objects that were contemporary to the time period in which Romulus and Remus were imagined to have lived.
