Abstract

This paper deals with the reproduction of items of furniture in perishable material, such as velaria or other additional elements, wreaths or floral garlands, for use in occasional religious and civil solemnities, practices or funeral celebrations. Originally a prerogative of large public contracts or of the upper classes, this phenomenon recurs in private contexts, becoming a fixture of patterns that would long remain part of the repertoire of wall and floor decoration in the Roman world.
