Abstract

This essay provides a brief survey of the contents of an unpublished sketchbook by Joseph Wright of Derby, preserved in the British Museum, and dating to the beginning of his Roman stay (February-June 1774). It places special emphasis on his studies of antique statues in the Capitoline Museum, and of plaster casts that were on display at the French Academy in Rome.
