Abstract

Gnathia between Agrippa and Antonius

In this essay two Latin inscriptions from Gnathia in the regio secunda Augustea are examined. One of these (CIL, IX, 262, now
lost) is dedicated to Agrippa as patronus of the town; the other is a
funerary inscription recalling one of Iullus Antonius’ liberti, who had been a slave of Archelaos. These inscriptions help us to trace the outline of the political atmosphere both in peripheral and in the core of Italy between 40 and 2 BC.
