Abstract

Water management between cities and central administration in the early imperial period

In antiquity, natural waterways were of primary importance for the administrative and economic life of a local community, which was vulnerable to floods and to their destructive effects. The need to manage the cleaning of the riverbed and banks, but also to derive water for public and private, caused frequently interventions by the central authorities. In this paper I study how natural waters were mentioned in municipal statutes, in an attempt to highlight the importance that water management had in the dialogue between Rome and local communities in the early imperial period.
