Abstract

E.P. Thompson illustrates exemplarily how the ideology, the political
and civil passion could induce to an historical research and determine
the choice of subjects and questions in the documents’ analysis. His
cultural background is a «Marxianism infiltrated with Voluntarism and
Romanticism», with a special attention to the radical English tradition, continuous in his studies, from William Morris (1955) to William Blake
(1993). This brief presentation concentrates on Thompson’s researches
on the English eighteenth century, from The Making of English Working
Class (1963) to Customs in Common (1991).
