Abstract

This essay touches upon key actors and changing ideologies in the reconstruction of the Doryphoros in bronze and its conflicting histories to the present day. Areas of discussion include lost Greek sculpture in the age of Historicism, the Doryphoros for a museum before World War I, the Doryphoros for a university war memorial after World War I and, after World War II, the Doryphoros as a meaningless classical shell without a spear and history.
