Abstract

This article reproduces the outline of a talk given by the Swiss historian, Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897), at the University of Basel in 1865. The topic was the dedication of the Temple of Apollo Palatinus in Rome by Augustus in 28 BCE. This new critical edition of the speech, which is based on Burckhardt’s manuscript notes, as preserved in the Staatsarchiv Basel, is preceded by an introduction that places the text in the context of Burckhardt’s scientific and academic life during the 1860s.
