Abstract

This paper analyses recent and less recent information on an Italic-Roman sanctuary on terraces near the Fucine lake, which discloses an extraordinary cultic continuity from the Paleolithic period to the Middle Age. A dedication to Jupiter and to the Dioscuri permits
to us to identify with no doubt the gods here worshipped at the end of the III century B.C. However, a few clues suggest that the figures of these gods are moulded upon those of mythical ancestors and find a prosecution in those of the saints Magno and Castulo, to whom theMedieval sanctuary was dedicated. A connection with the
cult of springs and ponds, as well as with hospitium and fides, can be recognized.
