Abstract

The study of Roman antiquities and anti-turkish propaganda in FlavioBiondo’s Roma triumphans
Roma triumphans, the last great work of the Italian humanist FlavioBiondo, was composed after the Fall of Constantinople at the hands ofMahomet II (1453) and was completed during the Congress of Mantua convoked by Pope Pius II in order to set up a crusade against the Turks.In some passages of Roma triumphans, which is actually a thematic encyclopediaof Roman antiquities, Biondo focuses on the problem of theTurkish threat. The aim of this paper is to analyze both these passageswithin the discussion of Roman antiquities, as well Biondo’s propagandistintent, which is particularly present in the latter part of the work.
