Abstract

The scutum from the Republican age to Trajan. A study and an experimentalreconstruction of a legionary scutum.
The aim of this paper is the study and the experimental reconstruction ofa Roman scutum. After having described the development of the scutumfrom the Republican era to the Trajan’s period, the guidelines for theconstruction of a 1st/2nd century A.D. shield are given, with particularattention to materials and construction techniques. A rich photographicdocumentation is included in the explanation.
