Abstract

Adultery in Roman declamation: a study of some tragical archetypesThe Adultery theme in the Roman declamation is developed by combiningtheatrical characters and events. This essay examines some declamatorypassages in order to analyze family conflicts and their connectionwith tragedy: the quarrel between two brothers in love with thesame woman recalls the myth of Atreus and Thyestes, but also in theparadigm of Agamemnon and Orestes the adultery and the incest aremain features. However the variants of the adultery theme seem to reaffirmtraditional Roman values.
