Abstract

This paper analyzes the text and meaning of a passage by a medical author called Cassius, which contains a polemical discussion that argues against a theory attributed to the Methodical school. The analysis focuses on Cassius’ dialectical method, and traces its cultural background as far back as Aristotle and Epicurus. This passage also contributes indirectly to a clearer understanding of Strato of Lampsacus’ theory of sleep, which is outlined in Aëtius’ doxographical work.
