Abstract

This paper sheds light on the role that public power played in the definition and affirmation of professions and crafts in early modern Tuscany, by re-examining pre-existing studies and the questions that they raise. It does this by focusing on the role of institutional structures in the formation of engineers, and of staff entrusted with public works.
