Abstract

This paper contextualizes the innovation, generally ascribed to J.J. Winckelmann, of the adoption of style as the main criterion in presenting a series of artefacts in chronological order. By focusing on P. von Stosch’s printed production, and in particular on his work on inscriptions on gems, and on the innovative layout of his treatise, the inscriptions – now recognized as artists’ signatures – emerge as innovative ordering criteria for both his work and the material itself. This approach seems to have deeply influenced later scholars, such as D.A. Bracci.
