Abstract

During the civil war between Sulla and the Marians, Arretium was probably besieged and eventually occupied by the Sulla’s army, which inflicted considerable damages to the city. Once Arretium was conquered, Sulla decided to punish the population by confiscating the territory, funding a colony, and imposing or trying to impose the ademptio civitatis. In this paper, the story of Arretium is examined integrating the news gathered by Gianfrancesco Gamurrini at the end of the XIX century and the findings derived from the most recent archaeological discoveries. In a broad context, the Arretium downfall episode has been compared with the history of other «Marian» cities defeated and punished by Sulla.
