Abstract

The intention of this article is to discuss anew one of the most disputed passages within the extant Epicurean corpus, i.e. Letter to Menoeceus 124. In the first part I try to elaborate who is the subject of the sentence ταῖς... νομίζοντες and how is concerned by damages and blessings from the gods. In addition to the appraisal of theories presented in former studies, I attempt to establish the conception of several levels of understanding used in the letter by Epicurus.
The second part features a complete listing of the various suggested solutions for the corrupt words αἴτιαι τοῖς κακοῖς from the 16th century until today, of which a complete overview has not yet been published.
