Abstract

The article focuses on the origin of the Classical Greek term ὕσσωπος in light of the Semitic sources. Particularly, it proposes a parallel with Ugaritic ʾuzb, and suggests that the Classical Greek term is a loanword from Ugaritic. Special emphasis is placed on the historical context where the Classical Greek term was borrowed.
