Abstract

This article introduces the preliminary results of the 2019 archeological excavations at Hierapolis in Phrygia (Turkey), within the framework of the Italian Archaeological Mission at Hierapolis (MAIER). Research focused on the site’s northern necropolis, leading to the identification of three architectural typologies: (1) stone seats attached to monumental tombs and to the bases of sarcophagi; (2) π-shaped exedrae with three rectilinear sides; (3) curvilinear exedrae or scholae. This paper discusses these structures in light of their distribution and function, and highlights their relevance for the purposes of historical and topographical reconstruction.
